The most famous stork couple is no longer together: scientists are not losing hope for Hrytsko's return

In the Pyriatynskyi National Nature Park, scientists still hope for the return of Hrytsko, a famous stork who did not appear this year with the female Odarka. This was stated in a comment to the journalist of UNN by Anatoliy Podobailo, a researcher at the Pyriatynskyi National Nature Park.

Details

Scientists from the Pyriatynskyi National Nature Park have recognized that Odarka and some other bird, not Hrytsko, now live in the bird's nest in the Poltava region.

According to Podobailo, at first they perceived the stork that returned first as Hrytsko, since the male usually arrives first. However, another stork appeared later, and then the scientists realized that it was not Hrytsko who had arrived first, but Odarka.

And when she fought off the young suitor, and then accepted him and settled down below, we realized that it was Odarka after all.

- said Podobailo.

"In general, he (Hrytsko, - ed.) should have returned a few days earlier than Odarka. This is a classic scheme: the male arrives, occupies the nest, drives away competitors, and waits for the female. Since he has been delayed until now, it is more likely that he died somewhere. But we have hope. If he does return, well, then there will be drama, there will be a fight, he will try to drive the competitor away. There may be such complex events," the scientist said.

Addition

On March 22, storks returned to their nest in the village of Leliaky in the Poltava region, which are being monitored by specialists from the Pyriatynskyi National Nature Park.

In particular, they have been monitoring the stork family for the third year in a row. During 2022-2024, Hrytsko and Odarka raised 12 chicks, and in August 2024, the birds left their nest.
