Coalition for a new government has been agreed upon in Germany

In Germany, the CDU/CSU and SPD parties have agreed to form a government coalition for the new German government, DW reports, writes UNN.

The bloc of German conservative parties Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) agreed on Wednesday, April 9, to form a government coalition with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). The parties plan to present the coalition agreement to the public in the afternoon

- reports the publication.

Details

The main elements of the agreement should be reforms in the areas of migration, economic and defense policy.

According to insiders, the parties also agreed on the distribution of ministries, but so far without specific names, the Reuters news agency reports. In particular, the Social Democrats should receive the portfolios of ministers of finance and defense, while the ministries of internal and foreign affairs will go to the CDU/CSU.

Even before the start of coalition negotiations and the work of the new Bundestag, the parties achieved changes to the German constitution in order to create multi-billion dollar funds to finance reforms in the field of infrastructure, defense and climate protection. To do this, they enlisted the support of the Green Party faction in the old Bundestag in order to achieve the necessary majority of votes. These legislative changes significantly facilitated the creation of a coalition.

Future Chancellor

The future chancellor should be the head of the CDU, Friedrich Merz. At the beginning of the negotiations, the CDU hoped to create a new government by Easter, which this year falls on April 20 in Germany. However, such a scenario is now considered unrealistic due to a number of obstacles that the parties need to overcome in order to formalize the creation of a coalition. In particular, the Social Democrats have planned a vote among party members on the coalition agreement, similar to those held in the past. The media has named May 7 as the date for the vote for the new chancellor in the Bundestag.

Additions

According to the results of the extraordinary elections to the Bundestag on February 23, the CDU/CSU won, gaining 28.6 percent of the vote, the Social Democrats took third place with 16.4 percent. The partially right-wing extremist party Alternative for Germany (AdN) came in second with 20.8 percent of the vote. However, all other parties elected to parliament refused to cooperate with it.

The current Bundestag began its work on March 25. Since then, the government of Social Democrat Olaf Scholz has been in office as acting officials. Despite the fact that Scholz's party should become part of the new government, Scholz himself has repeatedly stated that he does not plan to participate in it.
